Dance theatre of Harlem

Dance theatre of Harlem

Founded in 1968 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook.
In the peak of the civil rights movement in America, where extreme injustice and frustration lived came
the most impactful art.
Being one of the most dominant American ballet companies over the last 5 decades,
I present to you Dance Theatre of Harlem.
Arthur Mitchell being the first black principal dancer at New York City Ballet, this idea came about in 1955.
His teaching started humble and inclusive in a converted garage in his native Harlem.
By encouraging young males his garage became to little, which is when he partnered up with his former
ballet master Karel Shook, to eventually create Dance Theatre of Harlem. Focusing on dancers who have
been discouraged and had their dreams crushed.

This school broke racial and political boundaries, and continued to do so. For example by being the first
American ballet company to perform in Russia after the Soviet Union. Not to mentioned in 1992, the company
made a statement on tour to South Africa that their particular school was intended to be a post-apartheid
cultural enlightenment.
These are excellent example of a predominantly black and brown ballet company that has a stand in
international politics and questioning racial construct through simply sharing their art.
